Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary is an ever-growing large-animal rescue in eastern Sarasota County. Founded in 1987 by Kay Rosaire, the nonprofit sanctuary is a permanent home for dozens of exotic animals, offers placement for animals in need, and works to educate the public about animal care and conservation.

Why, just the cats, when sometimes they don’t eat for days in their natural wild environment, are each fed 20 pounds of meat a day. That’s a lot considering the sheer number of big cats you’ll encounter here. Several have very restricted diets and, as humans, specific tastes. Ground beef only, and chicken are among a few.
Ohio State alumni and friends are invited to an exclusive look at the Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary. The Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary is a nonprofit safe haven for big cats, bears and exotic wildlife. Our guests will enjoy early admission, lunch, the petting zoo and private tours of the sanctuary.
Daily shows at the Sanctuary include Parrots in Paradise, where brightly colored parrots display intelligence and strength in a fantastic 20-minute educational talk, and Big Cat Encounter, which is an up close and personal discussion that showcases the incredible agility and intelligence of big cats and other wildlife such as primates. There is also a daily guest appearance by Chance the Chimpanzee. The Big Cat Habitat is a 501(c)3 non-profit safe haven for big cats, bears, and other exotic and native animals in need. Kay Rosaire, who has more than 30 years of experience working with and caring for exotic animals, founded the habitat and manages it with the help of her son Clayton.
Visitors can watch a variety of educational training demonstrations with the animals using positive reinforcement techniques that have been developed over the year by Kay. The presentations highlight the unique relationships Kay and her team have with the animals and how gentle handling, praise and rewards for good behavior encourages the natural behaviors of large cats. Some of the animals that partake in the demonstrations include African Lions, Royal Bengal Tigers, Rare White Tigers, and endangered Siberian Tigers.
Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary is a non-profit organization that is backed by the income from welcome donations and daily demonstrations at the habitat. Volunteers play a critical part in support of the sanctuary, contributing to the expansion of the habitat and ongoing care for the animals. Visitors can help the Sanctuary in various ways, including donations, monthly sponsorship of an animal of choice, planned to give and to volunteer.

Big Cat Habitat has expanded! The expansion includes Primate condominiums, an aviary, expanded petting zoo and large koi pond. Elephants also will be given a permanent home at the sanctuary with the planned construction of a new elephant house and enclosure.
