Cat 5 Connectors

Welcome to our Network Cable and Patch Cord section, where you’ll find all manner of Cat cables, from Cat 3 to Cat 6, as well as our fiber optics and modular plugs and boots to help protect and secure your connection. For a bit of background, you can check out our article on Cat 5, Cat 5e and Cat 6 cables. As you may have noticed, we don’t stock much in the way of Cat5, since they’re fairly obsolete, but we do have a full range of Cat 5e and above options to choose from.

The main similarity between T568A and T568B is that they both provide wiring schemes for terminating twisted-pair copper network cable (CAT cables) to 8-position RJ45 jacks and connectors. “8 position” refers to the fact that RJ45 data transmission requires 8 conductors, which are provided by the 4 twisted wire pairs found in the copper-based network cable we just mentioned. The pairs in this type of cable are based on four colors (blue, orange, green and brown), with each of pair consisting of solid-colored wire twisted together with another wire that’s of the same color, but striped with white. When untwisted, the 4 pairs result in 8 individual wires: one for each pin of the jack or plug.

Category 6 is a major improvement over Cat 5e. It’s really just the bee’s knees. It’s suitable for up to 10 gigabit Ethernet at 250 MHz. To even better tackle the issue of that pesky crosstalkin’, Cat 6 cable has an internal separator that isolates pairs from one another. For those who want to “future-proof” their residential or commercial network as much as possible without a significant cost increase, Cat 6 is a great choice. That doesn’t mean it’ll protect your network from cyborgs from the future or anything, it just means it will keep it up to date for longer when the “next big thing” comes along

Step 2: Cut & Strip the CableShow All Items On your Crimpers ther is also a set of wire cutters, and two cable strippers. Cut about 1/4-1/2 of the end of the CAT V cable off to ensure that you have an even cut on the inner wires within the cable casing. In the case of CAT V cable, you are going to use the CAT V side of the strippers. This is a half circle with a blade above it. Stick about 1″ of the cable into the half circle of the casing stripper (the 1″ should be on or after the blade). this is important because in the next step you are going to be unraveling all 4 pairs of the exposed wire and will need to cut off a considerable amount of the underlying wire to be even with the inside of the RJ-45 Connector.

Your cable run needs to terminate into a connector, and that connector needs a jack to plug into. We’ve got just the things: RJ45 modular plugs and jacks for Cat5e and Cat6 cables, and single and multimode connectors for fiber optic cables.

On the other hand, we do have a selection of Cat 3 products, even though they’ve fallen out of favor for most network applications, having been largely replaced by Cat 5e. They’re still used for some voice and phone systems, however, so we still stock them.

Show All Items In this Instructable, i will teach you how to Terminate CAT 5 Cable with an RJ-45 Connector. This is easy when you get the hang of it, and becomes second nature after about 15-20 minutes. After you learn to Terminate CAT 5 Cable, you will be well on the road to Terminate 4 & 6 Wire Telephone Cable, and have a slight idea about Coaxial Terminations. I will be VERY shortly be making an Instructable about Terminating Coaxial cable as well. This is a great skill to know especially if you decide that you want to persue a networking career sometime in life. For those who have NO intentions on becoming a networking specialist, this is a great skill to have that will save you hundreds to pay someone to come out and do these things for you. You may need to shorten cable, change the location of the cable to a more convenient spot, or you might have moved, and now you are having trouble figuring out where you need to route your cables for your network.

2) Ordinarily, it would be taboo to untwist the pairs of any category 5 or 6 cable. The one exception to this rule is when crimping on RJ-45 plugs. It would be impossible to insert the wires into the channels without first untwisting and straightening them. Be sure not to extend the un-twisting, past the skin point. If you do it properly, you will wind up with no more than 1/2″ of untwisted conductors (up to 1/2″ of untwist meets the cat 5 or 6 specification).
