Owl Catching Cat. This incredible photo shows the moment an owl swooped on a family cat and flew off with it. It is well known that owls are capable of attacking cats and even small dogs but rarely is the event caught on film. Owls fly high up into the air, then drop their prey and snack on the corpse. The fate of this particular pussy is unknown The practice of bait bombing is also performed by eagles, sometimes with unexpectedly tragic consequences. Ancient Greek playwright, Aeschylus, was killed by a blow to the head from a falling tortoise dropped by a bird that mistook his shiny bald dome for a rock. Owls and pussycats traditionally have a rather more friendly relationship if we are to believe poet Edward Lear who wrote: The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea, In a beautiful pea green boat, They took some honey, and plenty of money, Wrapped up in a five pound note, The Owl looked up to the stars above, And sang to a small guitar, ‘O lovely Pussy! O Pussy my love, What a beautiful Pussy you are, You are, You are! What a beautiful Pussy you are!’ In the second verse the owl bludgeons pussycat to death with his guitar and feasts on his entrails. Only joking.

Ken Hughes saw the owl sitting in a tree above his driveway on March 11, and the next evening it attacked his grandson’s dog on the porch. Ken and his wife Althea have been the area since 1958; Ken has a degree in wildlife management and spent many years teaching in Gakona and Glennallen. He had heard of the earlier attacks and said another little white dog went missing and was found dead, a killing attributed to the owl. This time, though, the owl picked the wrong dog to mess with.

About the Great Horned Owl The great horned owl is the most common owl of the Americas, easily recognizable because of the feather tufts on its head. These “plumicorns” resemble horns or, to some, catlike ears. Habitat Great horned owls are adaptable birds and live from the Arctic to South America. They are at home in suburbia as well as in woods and farmlands. Northern populations migrate in winter, but most live permanently in more temperate climes. Parenting The birds nest in tree holes, stumps, caves, or in the abandoned nests of other large birds. Monogamous pairs have one to five eggs (two is typical), both the male and female incubate, and the male also hunts for food. Owls are powerful birds and fiercely protective parents. They have even been known to attack humans who wander too close to their young. Feeding and Hunting Like other owls, these birds have an incredible digestive system. They sometimes swallow their prey whole and later regurgitate pellets composed of bone, fur, and the other unwanted parts of their meal. Owls are efficient nighttime hunters that strike from above, and use their powerful talons to kill and carry animals several times heavier than themselves. Owls prey on a huge variety of creatures, including raccoons, rabbits, squirrels, domestic birds, falcons, and other owls. They regularly eat skunks, and may be the only animal with such an appetite. They sometimes hunt for smaller game by standing or walking along the ground. Owls have even been known to prey upon unlucky cats and dogs. Vocalizations Great horned owls are largely nocturnal so they can be difficult to spot. But in the dark after sunset, or just before dawn, they can often be heard vocalizing with their well known series of “Hoo H’hoos!”

This is the amazing story of an owl that flew straight into the window of a moving car. Not only did he —and the driver—miraculously survive the accident, but after breaking both wings, the owl became a surrogate parent in the hospital for orphaned owlets before he was finally released back to the wild in the backyard of the very man whose vehicle he collided with. All, thanks to a caring community of rehabilitators and volunteers.

Debbie Lorence and her friend Mary Howarth-Hernandez had taken the small dog on a walk in the middle of the day. They heard it yelping up ahead and rushed around a corner to find the owl attacking. They charged the bird and it flew off. As it turned out, the attack occurred in Alan LeMaster’s yard the day after the incident with the cat.

Lewis said that an owl going after a cat or a dog, especially when people are nearby, smacks of desperation. “I suspect there’s something going on with that bird and it wasn’t in good shape, or something was making it hard for it to catch wild prey. “

Gakona is a small town in Interior Alaska across the Copper River from Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, one of a series of communities near the junction of the Glenn and Richardson highways. In early March, two dogs and a cat in the area were attacked by an owl and several pet rabbits and a dog were found dead, presumed victims of the same raptor. The first incident occurred about March 8.
