Cats The Musical Costumes. 1939, or the present, or a time in space. Costumes are a major part of the Cats concept. Body suits or leotards are the basis of most costumes, painted appropriately for each character. Each has a fuzzy tail and is cinched with a gold chain belt. Matching leg-warmers and similar knit-tubes for wrists and lower arms. Wigs and fur enhance makeup and complete the catlike transformations. Gus the Theatre Cat, Old Deuteronomy and several others have coats made of fake fur. Grizabella has straggly fur cape, tattered feather headdress. Siamese headdresses for Siamese cats. Bulldog heads, Raggedy Ann and Andytype costumes à la comic strips. Growltiger, tigerstriped fake fur outfit, goggled eye, flylike mask and headdress, vest. Mr. Mistoffelees, stretch satin/ fur outfit, many collars, Old Deuteronomy’s cloak.

Hello melgre2,

I’m Kaori. I’m studying in Japan cloth academy. I’m very interested in making musical costumes. In the future, I want to work for sewing of musicals.

Now I’m seeking a opportunity to be an intern for sewing of musicals. And I found your name in the instructables site. So I sent the email to you.

I was playing dance from 6 years old to 22 years old. So I like to think about costumes which are good for dance. And when I watched CHICAGO, phantom of the opera, Mamma-Mia! Ten years ago in our family vacation, I was shocked the power of ENTERTAINMENT.
And I decided to be going to work there anyway.
So I’m seeking the opportunity. If you know anything, it’s very helpful for me.

Would you have any information?

Jellicle cats are a tribe of fictional feline creatures that were created by T.S. Eliot and brought to life in the stage musical Cats. A Jellicle cat costume is a skin-tight outfit that has fur, feline markings, and a furry headpiece. If you’re going out as a Jellicle for Halloween, to a costume party, or starring in a production of Cats, making your own costume can be a fun DIY project. The major components of the costume include the suit, the fur trimmings, the headpiece, and the tail.

I worked on the costume on and off for about two months, but as I had school I could only work on it when I had free time. I can’t give an estimate of how many hours I spent working on it.

I got my unitard from Discount Dance.

I do have an instructable for the wig, and I’d like to make some more for the other parts of the costume. The only part I’m not sure about it the unitard, just because there’s so many different ways to paint a unitard. But I will look into making some other instructables on Cats costumes!

What It Is: Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s iconic musical Cats returned to Broadway this summer, with British chanteuse Leona Lewis making her debut on the Great White Way as Grizabella, The Glamour Cat. (Her run in the show ended last month, and School of Rock actress Mamie Parris has since taken over the “Memory”-making role.) I went behind the scenes at the theater and got a crash course in stage makeup, skin-tight unitards and choreography before making my own debut on a Broadway stage.

As I mentioned earlier, the Cats cast does their own makeup. But because layering on that face cake can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours — and they had a matinée on the day of my visit — Victoria did mine for me. The girl is a pro and has worked on musical productions in New York and around the country, so I was in good hands.

This all-dance show’s action is set on a gigantic rubbish dump which, after dark, becomes alive with cats of all types, shapes and sizes. Soon there are cats all over the place, including the auditorium, gathering for the Jellicle Ball during which one cat will be selected by the Jellicle Leader and allotted an extra precious life. It is the former glamour cat, Grizabella – turned dishevelled outcast who, at the end of the evening, is chosen by Deuteronomy to receive the prized additional life.

From start to finish, this costume took me about two months. But I didn’t work on it constantly, and there were a couple of weeks where I didn’t work on it at all. The wig itself only took me 3 or 4 days, again, not working on it constantly.

I didn’t use a mannequin for the unitard, but other Cats costumers use one and find it much easier. I don’t have a mannequin, so I made do with painting flat.

I knit my arm and leg warmers, but other people have used fleece with detailed painted or sewn on or faux fur.

I got my unitard from Discount Dance, an online dance store. If you look up “Mock Neck Unitard” on Google, you should be able to find many online stores that sell them.

I used fabric paint for the unitard. I ordered fabric paint online. I used Jaquards Textile Colors and Setacolor for this unitard, but for other unitards I bought Tulip Fabric Paints from my local Joann Fabrics and used those.

As for makeup, I had some theatrical and clown makeup lying around the house, and used that. I later bought some Snazaroo waterbased makeup I found at Michaels. You can buy makeup online, just search for theatre makeup and figure out what might work best for you.

Thank you! Face-painting is quite difficult until you become comfortable with having a brush that close to your eyes. It’s very much a practiced skill, my first few faces were very messy with shaky lines.

As this was an original character, I went through several trial faces until I found a good design, but with most canon characters, I pick a reference and try to copy it to my own face. Eventually, with enough faces, you don’t even need a reference. But practice is key, it’s really about becoming comfortable with the medium and the basic features of Cats makeup.

It’s the night of the Jellicle Ball. The cat clan has gathered for the annual event at which the revered elder Old Deuteronomy chooses the most deserving cat to ascend with him for a heavenly reward. The cats have gathered, and one by one, we learn about their personalities, exactly as T. S. Eliot portrayed them in his book of poems. Jennyanydots, Cassandra, Bombalurina, and Jellylorum are the first to strut their stuff. They welcome Rum Turn Tugger, a rock-star-idol type of cat, creating just the right mood for the arrival of Grizabella, the Glamour Cat. She is an aging beauty who has roamed some of the lowest alleys.

The younger felines mock and avoid her. Bustopher Jones, mature and well-rounded, catches everyone’s eye with his natty clothes and well-groomed look. Mungojerrie and Rumple teazer, two mischievous, fun-loving cats, provide a light moment before Old Deuteronomy arrives and sets a more serious tone for the ball. Barred from the festivities, Grizabella reflects on her memory of happier times and the new life that could be ahead. Also on the sidelines, Gus the Theatre Cat finds fault with the lack of dedication he perceives in today’s actors and reminisces about some of his finest roles. In Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat, we find great pride and commitment in doing the rela tively small job of keeping a single train on schedule. Macavity, the “fiend in feline shape, a monster of depravity,” is talked about in hushed voices. “Was there ever a cat so clever as magical Mr. Mistoffelees?” Yes, and much to the delight of all he bursts upon the scene. Still it is Grizabella that demonstrates the greatest depth of character and need. She is chosen to accompany Old Deuteronomy on this year’s accension “up, up, up, past the Russell Hotel. Up, up, up to the Heaviside layer.”

Three weeks ago, I lived out my Broadway dreams and got glammed up, slid into a Spandex bodysuit and hit the stage to learn some moves with the cast of #Cats.
