Self Cleaning Litter Box Multiple Cats

self cleaning litter box multiple cats 1

Do you have a multiple cat household? Are you overwhelmed with the number of conventional litter boxes in your home? The Humane Society and other sources suggest having 1.5 litter boxes per cat. That means three litter boxes for two cats and five litter boxes for three! Think about all of the crouching, scooping and replenishing involved in a three-cat home. If you love your big family of kitties, but you’re having trouble managing all of their many waste receptacles, then perhaps you need something simpler. The Litter Robot! Voila! Why not replace your five conventional litter boxes with one automatic self-cleaning litter box? It’ll be even more effective, and you’ll have less than 1/5 of the work to do. A Clean Box, Every Time! One of the chief reasons for one and a half litter boxes per cat is cleanliness. As cat owner, there’s only so much scooping that you’re going to be able to do in a day, and the typical cat owner wants to minimize that as much as possible. With only one box and three cats, you’d be practically scooping all day long just to keep the box clean enough to keep your cats satisfied. So, at least with conventional litter boxes, one per cat plus an extra or two is a safe way to ensure that your cats are always arriving at a relatively fresh litter box. But what if there was some device that could clean itself after each use, to ensure that the next kitty to arrive would be presented with a completely clean environment? Oh, what’s that, you say…you say there is such a device, and it’s called the Litter Robot? Well, by golly, how about that? Now, with just one Litter Robot, your multiple cat household no longer has to be a multiple litter box household, too. Touché, Automated Pet Care, touché. Reduced Competition! Another factor that plays into the use of litter boxes in a multiple cat household, and which can necessitate a separate litter box for each cat, is a level of spirited (or sometimes just plain bullying) competition. When one cat decides that the other will have to acknowledge the first cat’s dominance before being permitted to use the litter box, it can lead the second cat to eliminate waste elsewhere to avoid confrontation. But why introduce a second, or third, litter box only to alleviate the symptom, when you could face and resolve the problem directly. With an automatic self-cleaning litter box like the Litter Robot, you not only solve the effects of the competition, but you can actually relieve the competition entirely. When your litter box actually cleans itself after each use, you’ll find that your cats will be less prone to identifying it as “their” domain, but rather see it as a universal (and readily accessible) location to make waste. So, don’t allow one cat to bully the others, but level the playing field with the technologically superior Litter Robot, instead! If your multiple cat household is becoming too much of a burden, there’s a simple and convenient solution that will have you and your cats much happier than before. A Litter Robot is the answer to every one of your multiple cat, multiple litter box dilemmas.

When researching self-cleaning litter boxes, you will be surprised to learn that almost none of these products operate the same way. They comprise a unique category of consumer products where each litter box tends to use entirely different technology than the next—unlike, say, your standard toilet, which functions pretty much the same way as any other toilet. Maybe it's an issue of patents, or maybe it's just because no one has figured out the single best way to automatically scoop cat litter. Regardless, this differentiation has led to some pretty innovative designs, which we're going to discuss in the following paragraphs. History The history of self-cleaning litter boxes is brief, because they've only been around since around 1991. It looks like the first design for an automatically cleaning litter box was patented in September 1991 by Angelo Carlisi. Like most of today's models, it suggests using a motor-driven rake to filter the solids out. The design was probably made possible by the invention of clumping cat litter in the 1980s, which made cat litter less messy and easier to filter. Sensors Most of today's electronic self-cleaning litter boxes are equipped with a sensor. At its most basic, this sensor is activated when a cat enters or exits the litter box. Usually, there is a pre-programmed time delay that begins when the sensor is activated, and gives the cat an adequate amount of time to finish its business before the scooping action starts. Some of the more complex litter boxes have sensors that even register and adjust to the cat's weight, allowing them to accommodate large and small cats alike. Rake To filter out the waste from the clean litter, the majority of cat boxes use an automated rake that sifts the excrement into a waste tray. Some of these litter boxes, such as the Litter Robot, use an ingenious rotating mechanism to do this. The dome-shaped bin itself rotates, moving the litter past a stationary rake. In other models, a rake moves through a rectangular bin, depositing clumps into a waste tray or other receptacle. In some boxes that use this latter mechanism, such as the ScoopFree, the method is enhanced by the usage of crystals that absorb urine and desiccate solids, thus reducing odors and making it less likely that the rake's tines will get clogged. The CatGenie goes one step further, raking solids into a vessel where they are essentially liquefied and disposed into a drain usually leading into the toilet. Safety mechanism It may be easy to imagine a horrifying accident in which your curious cat enters the litter box during its cleaning cycle, but fear not, because the engineers have anticipated this and incorporated solutions into their designs. Many self-cleaning litter boxes have safety mechanisms that are activated when a sensor detects that your cat has entered the box. Once activated, the raking mechanism will stop, and the delay timer will reset, giving your cat an adequate amount of time to leave the litter box.

A lot of people don't like handling cat litter because being in close proximity to feces is just gross—and who can blame them? But there might be scientific evidence to support the positions of those who want to stay away from cat litter by buying a self-cleaning litter box. By automatically scooping the litter, self-cleaning litter boxes both inhibit parasitic and bacterial growth in feces and ensure a minimal amount of contact between the user and the excrement. Research shows that cat feces can, under some circumstances, lead to a variety of parasitic and bacterial infections if not handled properly. Toxoplasma gondii is a parasite excreted in cat feces. Not all cats have the parasite, but they can get a Toxoplasma infection by ingesting infected rodents or the feces of other infected cats. Once infected, a cat can shed the parasite in their feces for up to two weeks. Although rare, people can become infected with toxoplasmosis in several ways. Among those is through the ingestion of anything that has become contaminated by the feces of infected cats. Those who become infected with toxoplasmosis show either no symptoms or mild illness, but it can have severe effects on fetuses when pregnant women become infected. Through the unsanitary handling of soiled cat litter, people can also contract bacterial infections such as campylobacteriosis, caused by the Campylobacter bacteria. Campylobacteriosis can cause flu-like symptoms, such as a fever, headache, cramps, or diarrhea. Cats can also become infected with Salmonella bacteria, in which case, the resulting salmonellosis can be transmitted to humans. Salmonellosis can cause similar symptoms to those of campylobacteriosis, such as severe diarrhea and cramps. While the chances of contracting any of these infections are rare, self-cleaning cat boxes can minimize human contact with potentially dangerous cat feces. Because of this, they might be a particularly advantageous investment for people with diseases that compromise their immune systems and could cause these minor infections to become life-threatening.

Automatic Night Light An automatic night light helps aid elderly cats during night time visits. The light can be toggled on and off. Adjustable Cycle Timer Depending on your preference, you can choose a 3- , 7- , or 15-minute delay from the time your cat uses the Litter-Robot to the time it cycles. Control Panel Lock Out This optional setting will lock out all button functions on the control panel while still allowing the unit to function in automatic mode. 8 Hour Sleep Mode When activated, for a period of 8 hours, the Litter-Robot will only cycle when the Cycle button is pressed manually. Drawer Full Indication A blinking blue light will notify you when the waste drawer is full. Battery Backup (Optional) The optional Battery Backup Kit will provide 24-48 hours of reserve power, so that your Litter-Robot will remain operational in the event of a power outage. Can kittens use the Litter-Robot Open Air? It depends how much your kitten weighs. The Litter-Robot senses the weight of your cat to know when it enters and exits, which triggers the countdown timer and Clean cycle. Kittens and small cats that weigh less than 5 pounds may not be heavy enough for the sensor to detect. Until they weigh enough, we recommend using your Litter-Robot in “semi-automatic” mode to keep your cat safe and relieve you from litter box scooping. For semi-automatic mode, leave the Litter-Robot switched off or unplugged. When you see your cat has used it, wait about 7 minutes for the waste to clump, then turn it on/plug it in. The Litter-Robot will automatically perform a Clean cycle (takes about 2 ½ minutes), after which you should turn the unit off/unplug it again. Continue this supervised, semi-automatic mode until your kittens have gained sufficient weight to activate the Cat Sensor. Can I use the Litter-Robot for multiple cats? Yes! Multiple cats can use the same Litter-Robot—and each one will have a clean place to go each time, thanks to the automatic Clean cycle. More cats means more waste, so make sure to empty the waste drawer more frequently. Use this infographic to learn how many units are best for how many cats. Hi Kristina, I will start saying that almost 99% of cats take to the Litter Robot without problems. I think the issue you are having now with your 2 cats is the fact that the litter box is not always clean and this creates behavioral problems when cats need to share the same litter box. My cat Sophie uses the Litter Robot without problem, as the bottom is rounded most of the litter area is deep enough for a cat to dig. In the review I mentioned 13 cups but you can put more than that. I’ve been adding more litter lately just to check the limit point and it’s between 14 and 15 cups which is plenty of litter.

Filling the Litter Tray Fill your litter box so the litter level is between the MIN and MAX fill lines on either side of the litter box. Use the scoop and rake cleaner to evenly distribute litter in the litter tray. Tip: To measure litter at the center of the box, insert the scoop and rake cleaner, scoop down, into the center of the litter tray. The fill line on the scoop is even with the MAX fill line on the tray.

Overview: The ScoopFree is the best automatic cat litter box for the price tag and is one of the leading rake operated cat boxes on the market, using blue crystal disposable litter trays which are designed to sponge up moisture, effectively cutting down on odor as soon as your cat does his/hers business. The design is nothing foreign in comparison to an ordinary cat box which enables cats to easily warm up to their new ScoopFree toilet. The ScoopFree automatic litter box lives up to its name being one of the best hands free rake operated litter pan solutions. As mentioned before odor is not an issue with this unit as it utilizes blue crystal litter along with the trash receptacle being fully equipped with it own carbon filters to further extinguish any bad odors.

Catgenie Self Washing Cat Litter Box

Do the cats have to go in wet Granules? The CatGenie completely dries the Granules so cats have a dry litter-like bed to do their business in comfort. Is the CatGenie noisy during the washing process? Of the less than 30-minute process, 26 minutes are as quiet as a purr. During three short periods you’ll hear the sound of water draining similar in volume to your washing machine. How long does the cleaning and drying process take? The entire process takes less than 30 minutes. What if my cat has to use the CatGenie while it is washing? Cats sleep from 15 to 20 hours a day. They pass solids within 30 minutes of eating their main meal. So you have plenty of time to run the CatGenie. Or you can set it on Cat Activation. After your cat does his business, your CatGenie waits 10 minutes before cleaning. In a multi cat household, it gives a second cat time to come in. It then resets and waits another 10 minutes, to allow another cat to use it. CatGenie does this until every cat is done. You also have Auto Start (pre set to run 1 to 4 times daily) and Manual Start options. How safe are the Washable Granules? What if my cat ingests them? The Washable Granules are a non-toxic combination of safe synthetic and natural ingredients. If swallowed, the small, smooth granules will simply pass through the digestive system. Is the CatGenie safe for cats? Absolutely. We love cats and would never do anything to harm them. Our goal is to help improve the relationship between pets and people by solving the hated litter box problem for good. Is the SaniSolution in the 120 Cartridge safe for cats? The SaniSolution cleaner used in the 120 Cartridge is tested safe for cats. It has the same ingredients that veterinarians use to clean their operating and examinations areas. What happens if my cat is in the box when a cleaning cycle starts? Built-in sensors, called GenieEyes, know when your cat is using the CatGenie so the cleaning will not start. If programmed for Auto Set will not start until 60 seconds AFTER the cat has left. If another cat jumps in, the CatGenie waits until that cat leaves. It waits another 60 seconds before it Auto Starts. If programmed for Cat Activation, the CatGenie waits 10 minutes after the cat leaves. If another cat needs to use it, the CatGenie resets and waits another 10 minutes. Of course you would never start the washing process when the cat is using it. Will my cat accept the different cat box? Cats accept the cat-friendly shape and comfy litter Granules of the CatGenie. They use the CatGenie as they use any clean litter box. Will the washing scare my cat? Cats come to realize that the cleaning is a good thing. Our animal behaviorists have told us that cats learn to associate the cleaning with a benefit. For cats that’s a clean, fresh cat area. They especially like the warmed Granules. We do recommend that during the first week, you activate the cleaning to run while your cats are sleeping.

Can the CatGenie work in homes with septic systems? Yes, it is safe for septic systems. Only waste water and a few Washable Granules get flushed each day. Any lost Washable Granules biodegrade in less than 9 months. Do I need a plumber to install my CatGenie? In 99% of cases, a plumber is NOT needed to connect the CatGenie. The setup is simple. With your purchase, you receive an outside-diameter, 1/2-inch (inside-diameter, 3/8-inch) T-adapter for bathroom setup and an outside-diameter, 1-inch (inside-diameter, 3/4-inch) T-adapter for laundry room setup. These fit 95% of locations. Some non-standard hookups may require a different size T-adapter, which PetNovations does not provide. They are inexpensive and available at home center stores. Does it hook up to plumbing? Yes the Cat Genie hooks up to cold water intake from a sink, toilet or washing machine. The drain hose merely hooks over a toilet rim or the drainpipe behind your washing machine. It is a simple, do-it-yourself set up. Does the CatGenie need electricity? The CatGenie needs an electrical outlet for power to operate. How do I clean the CatGenie Self-Washing Cat Box? The great benefit of the CatGenie is that it is the only cat box that actually washes and cleans itself. Like any appliance, it is a good idea to wipe the outside surfaces and take it apart and do a thorough cleaning 2x a year. The CatGenie 120 has a Maintenance Cartridge that you use a few times a year to remove lime and grime that could build up in hard to reach areas. The Water Sensor, a small, easy to reach part, should be cleaned when you change a Cartridge. How does solid waste get through the pipes? The solids get ground up into liquid for safe and easy removal down the drain. How long does it take to set up the CatGenie? On average, it takes less than 15 minutes to set up the CatGenie. How many times a day should I run the CatGenie 120? Run the CatGenie 120, for one to two cycles per cat per day. And run the CatGenie at least once every day even if you don’t see waste in the box. To be sure it’s clean after use, set it on Cat Activation. It’s cleaner and more economical because the 120 Cartridge adjusts to dispense the SaniSolution for 240 washes. Where is the best place to locate a CatGenie? The CatGenie can be hooked up in any room that has an incoming water supply, drainage and an electric outlet like Bathroom, Powder room, and Laundry or Utility Room.

The stools get flushed so how can I check for problems? You can easily check for trouble before you push the wash button. Don’t pre set the CatGenie to start on automatic when you want to examine the feces. What do veterinarians say about the CatGenie? Because the CatGenie is totally washed and cleaned everyday, it greatly reduces the chances of inappropriate elimination. Frequency of replenishment depends on the number of cats in your home. On average, a box of Washable Granules will last up to 6 months. How often do the Washable Granules need changing or replacement? Actually, the Washable Granules never need changing or replacement as they are washed, scrubbed, and cleaned every time the CatGenie runs. However, you will need to add Granules because some will be lost as they may stick to solids or get kicked out of the Basin. Just keep the Basin filled to the safe-level line for optimum performance and for your cat’s comfort. Will the Granules clog my pipes or damage my septic system? No. In a traditional sewer or septic system, the Washable Granules are safe for your pipes and will biodegrade in a septic or sewer system in 9 months or less (2 years or less in a landfill). Only the few Granules that stick to solids will end up down the drain or in the septic system.

Great dog bed. My Brittany attacked it when it came out of the box and has been sleeping in the bed every day since. The bed is set up in the kitchen and whenever the pup is lying down during the day she is in the bed, which keeps her comfortable and warm during these cold winter days. The 24″ size is just right for her at the age of 4 months. She likes to sleep all curled up and I hope she’ll fit when grown up. The non-slip bottom works well, keeping the bed in place on my wooden floor.

I bought a kitty cave bed and this bed from someplace else (someone gave me a gift certificate or I would have gone to Chewy first). Kitty loved this one so much I HAD to get another. Kitty loves to knead the sides and curl up in it. When she’s sleeping in it you have to look over the edge to see her. I think we will be getting more in the future as our kitty is confined to a large crate for at least another 5 months. I have washed and dried the first one, excellent results! I bought the round one, not the rectangular that is pictured. Great price and great product!
