The Smart Cat Box is in my opinion one of the very best natural, non-clay litter systems on the market. I met the inventor, Sarah Maguire, President of Providence House Manufacturing and immediately understood that she is completely dedicated to creating an alternative cat litter box that is healthier for you and your cat and better for the environment. The Smart Cat Box is the original two-part litter box. It uses all-natural, non-absorbent litter pellets and a patented two-part box design to separate solid and liquid waste. The top portion of the box holds natural safflower seed litter that allows urine to pass through the slotted floor into a covered urine collection reservoir below. Solids can be easily scooped from the litter pellets and liquids are disposed of by emptying the reservoir. By separating solid and liquid waste and containing urine in a covered reservoir, the Smart Cat Box dramatically reduces unwanted odors. Healthy for Cats & People Concerns about the health risks of using clay and clumping cat litters that contain silica and sodium bentonite have caused some cat owners to seek out non-clay litter alternatives. The safflower seed litter used in the Smart Cat Box is completely natural and safe for both cats and humans. Collecting liquid waste separately also allows cat owners to easily test blood sugar levels in urine for diabetic and special needs cats. This feature of the Smart Cat Box makes it an excellent tool for both cat owners and veterinarians who need to regularly monitor a cat’s health. Healthy for the Environment Traditional clay litters have a negative impact on the environment on both ends of the lifecycle since clay litter is a non-renewable resource that is gathered by strip mining and it adds to our growing landfills. The safflower seed litter used in the Smart Cat Box is made from a renewable resource that is fully biodegradable and is grown in the U.S. I’ve used the Smart Cat Box for years. The reservoir is very easy to empty and the cats like the safflower seed pellets. I added on the extender walls (shown below) to give the sides of the box a little more height to prevent seeds from being kicked out. The seeds are completely dust free and can be rinsed several times before requiring complete replacement. The Smart Cat Box, the safflower seed pellets, and the extender walls are all available directly from the manufacturer at SmartCatBox.com. thecatcoach TCS Member Veteran 102 16 Jun 15, 2008 Yes, I, Marilyn Krieger, do recommend non-clumping litters for kittens. The reason I do is because kittens can eat litter, and one doesn't want the litter causing obstructions. The boxes should be cleaned frequently. Also, since the kitten boxes are small, they are very easy to dump and replace with clean litter. Cats do not like litter boxes that are dirty and smell like urine. One of the biggest reasons for cats to not use their boxes is because they aren't clean enough. A couple of reasons for this is because a dirty box has the potential of attracting a predator and/or scaring away a potential food source. I have not tried the Tidy Cat Breeze, because of my concerns about urine collecting on a pad. I do test litters and am very willing to test this new system, if Tidy Cat would like to send me one. I do use Tidy Cat (non scented) litter for one of my cats. It's the only one he likes and it's a really good litter. That being said, there are many different litters out there that are very effective. Many cats love Feline Pine pellets, they are used to it and do well with it. Feline Pine offers a litter box system that is made up of 3 boxes. One of the boxes is a sifter, sifts the sawdust and urine through to the bottom layer. Since these are pellets, they are also dust free. Feline Pine also has a clumping version as well which does track. Some cats do well with the pellets, others don't. Whatever litter you have, when transitioning a cat to a new litter, it should be done very slowly, adding a cup at a time of the new litter into the old box. Also, make sure that the new box isn't located in an area where a cat can feel cornered, such as a closet or a bathtub. And, the box shouldn't be covered. Marilyn Krieger, CCBC

For anyone that uses pellets, especially with the Breeze system, these are great! They are much quieter than the standard Breeze pellets and I feel like they handle odor 100% better. They do create a lot of debris falling onto the pad below, however I think that’s partly what helps there to be no smell. There is also NO dust. If you need another reason to buy these aside from the fact that they are awesome, they are also much cheaper than the Breeze pellets. I recommend this product 100%!
